WE ARE THE PROUD UNIONIZED CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS OF TDCJ

We are the largest organization representing T.D.C.J employees. We are also the only state employee organization certified by the comptroller that represents T.D.C.J employees in disciplinary or grievance matters. We advocate for improvements at T.D.C.J that we believe will improve retention. At our core is a commitment to advocate for positive changes in staffing, equipment, training, breaks, overtime, and other working conditions

WHY SHOULD I JOIN THE UNION?

Being in a right to work state, by design, are anti-union.  People working in the public and private sector would virtually have no rights without unions fighting for us long and hard throughout the years. If you ever paid attention in high school, you might remember how in the 19th century there were no child labor laws.  During the Industrial Revolution, American laborers would work 70 plus hours a week for pennies on the dollar.  Therefore, in order to feed their families, wives and children were also forced to work those hours in the factories.  At this time about one in every four children were injured in the work place.  As early as the 1830's Unions were fighting to end child labor.  Today we have child labor laws in the United States.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire happened in New York in 1911.  In order to make sure employees were not taking breaks, managers locked factory workers, some as young as 14, in the clothing factory.  When the fire started, the factories workers could not break threw the locked doors and 146 people either burned or leaped out of windows to their death.

There are so many more examples in our history where Unions have stood and fought for what we have today such as The Bread and Roses Strike, and the Ludlow Massacre. The fact is that men, women, and children have died for the rights we have in our work place today.

So what else have Unions done for us that we may not realize?  Well, lets make a list!

  •     Weekends                          Worker's Comp
  •     All breaks at work             Unemployment Insurance
  •     Paid Vacation                     Pensions
  •     F.M.L.A                               Workplace Safety Standards
  •     Sick Leave                          Employer Health Care Insurance
  •     Social Security                   Collective Bargaining Rights
  •     Minimum Wage                 Wrongful Terminations Laws
  •     Civil Rights Act                  Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
  •     8-Hour work day               Employee Polygraph Protect Act
  •     Overtime Pay                     VETS
  •     OSHA                                  Raises
  •     40 Hour Work Week        Sexual Harassment Laws

These are only a few of the benefits we enjoy because of unions here in the U.S.  So again, why did we decide to form our union for T.D.C.J workers? The answer is simple, despite all the benefits we have now, we still need to stand strong together to make our workplace even better for us!  Even though collective bargaining is beneficial, we do not have collective bargaining in the state of Texas for T.D.C.J workers. We must stand strong and keep growing our numbers across Texas to get our collective bargaining rights! We deserve a raise, equipment that is up to date, equipment that works, equipment that fits us.  We deserve to not worry about our pensions.  Every year our union fights to keep our pensions from going to a 401(k).  We deserve a third party that is not of T.D.C.J when it comes to the disciplinary actions that we receive.  We must keep growing in numbers, take action on behalf of our own workers, show strong unity in the community, and get our collective bargaining rights! It is a vision we are striving for and one that we will accomplish! Remember that you are a proud member of our union and you can be active and your voice will be heard!  If you are not a member today we hope you will be one tomorrow!  Thank you to all our members and please keep up the great work!
